Nurturing Social Success: PEERS® for Neurodiverse Youth
In the transition to adulthood, neurodiverse and autistic youth face unique challenges in social interactions. Addressing this need, the PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) program, originating from UCLA, is a pioneering social skills intervention. Grounded in research, it equips participants with vital tools for navigating social complexities.
Key Skills Taught in PEERS®:
- Basic Social Skills: Initiating and maintaining conversations, using verbal and nonverbal cues.
- Understanding Social Cues: Recognizing facial expressions, body language, and nuances like sarcasm.
- Friendship Building: Identifying friends, navigating friendship stages, and organizing social events.
- Conflict Resolution: Handling disagreements, compromise, and respecting boundaries.
- Online Interactions: Understanding appropriate online behavior and differentiating between virtual and face-to-face interactions.
- Role-Playing and Practice: Simulated social situations, feedback, and confidence-building.
- Generalization and Application: Transferring skills to real-life, overcoming anxiety, and integrating into daily routines.
- Family Support: Insights for parents, consistent home-based approaches, and building a strong support network.
- Problem-Solving and Emotional Regulation: Strategies for social challenges, resilience, and managing emotional responses.
Empowering neurodiverse youth, PEERS® instills lifelong skills, fostering a sense of belonging and success in a broader community.
The program’s comprehensive curriculum aims to equip participants with a robust toolkit for navigating a wide range of social situations and promoting overall well-being.
