Autism and Apraxia

The Importance of Screening for Both

This online article describes a study indicating that approximately 65 percent of children with an autism diagnosis are also affected by apraxia. Children with apraxia have difficulties with coordinating the use of their tongue, lips, mouth and jaw to produce speech sounds accurately.

Autism Speaks describes itself as an organization “dedicated to advancing research into causes and better treatments for autism spectrum disorders and related conditions both through direct funding and collaboration; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorders; and working toward solutions for the needs of individuals with autism and their families across the spectrum and lifespan through advocacy and support.” [Website]
