PEERS for Preschoolers is an evidence-based social skills program developed at UCLA to help children aged 4 to 6 years learn how to make and maintain friendships.
The program consists of 16 weekly sessions, each 90 minutes long, conducted online via Zoom. During these sessions, parents are taught how to coach their child on key social skills for developing friendships. Lessons feature role-play videos, puppet shows, and interactive activities tailored for young learners. Parents are also provided with resources to practice these skills through weekly homework assignments and receive personalized feedback to enhance their coaching abilities.
While the program is designed primarily for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), its structured approach is also beneficial for children with ADHD, anxiety, communication difficulties, and other socio-emotional challenges. The program teaches essential social behaviors, such as greeting others, sharing and taking turns, and managing emotions effectively.
With parental involvement at the heart of the program, parents learn to reinforce these skills in everyday interactions. This comprehensive approach helps children develop essential social competencies while empowering parents to guide their child confidently through social situations.
